Saxon Phonics?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi all,

My niece just started kindergarten. Her school system has adopted Saxon Phonics (and Saxon math) for their teaching programs. Is anyone familiar with this?

Thanks,
Lil

Lil,

Anna’s school uses both. They are very good programs. The vast majority of kids learn the phonics well with Saxon. A true LD child, however, will need more. The test scores at her school are high, so I’d have to say that the programs are very good for most kids.

Thanks Janis!

I thought I remembered you saying something like that before, but I couldn’t remember which list or how long ago. :-) Thanks for the confirmation. My neice is NT - it’s her older brother I’ve been asking questions about.

Did you get my note about the Read America clinic results?

Yes, I got your note and was VERY interested to hear about the trip…just ran out of time last night to reply! I just replied briefly to you on the thread where you posted about your trip on the reading board.

I haven’t used the phonics program, but I do use their math programs extensively, and really love them. They work well with LD kids, although the students I’ve used them with have never been on a grade-level curriculum. Lots of repetition, lots of manipulatives in the lower grades especially, they stress learning the facts, but also teach, actually teach, how to solve word problems. I highly recommend it. They also have a great customer support line ~ very friendly and helpful when you need to call.
