Scheduling

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I presently teach in a 4th, 5th, 6th grade building and we have a new principal this year. I am teaching a5th grade L.D.resource room for language arts and math this year and it’s working out quite well because half my students are in one homeroom on one of two 5th grade teams, and half are in another homeroom on the other team. Because of this I just have half the students at a time making it easier to provide individual attention. We worked out the schedule ahead of time so that the students are with me for a big block of time instead of coming and going during the day. Also with just two teachers to work with it is easier to coordinate and modify for the regular fifth grade subjects such as social studies and science. I am concerned about next year however because our new principal seems unfamiliar with the elementary environment and with the needs of elementary L.D. students. The new principal wants the students scattered among teachers and I am afraid the schedule will be a nightmare between covering inclusion and becoming familiar with numerous teachers’ systems and expectations. Also their schedules will probably be all different so the class will probably be like a revolving door all day which will not be ideal for L.D. students. I would like to know how other schools do their schedules and if you do several grade levels, the same grade level each year or move up with the students to the next grade level. I’m trying to figure something out that would work so that we may propose it to the new principal early enough before plans are already made. Any suggestions would be helpful.
