Last night I went to the parent orientation for the middle school my NLD son will attend next year. There are still things that will have to be modified for him, but I was really plesed with the over-all attitude of the staff, and the things that are often thought of as “accomodations” that they are working in for ALL kids.
They just purchased a second complete set of math text books for the 6th graders so that EVERY child will have a math book that they can keep at school, and a second set to use in class. That takes the heaviest text book out of every backpack every day! They are working toward doing the same with other textbooks, but, of course they are expensive, so they can only do it a little at a time.
Another similar “accomodation” is that all parents were invited to bring their new middle schoolers over during the summer to walk them around the building and help them learn where things are. Up until this year, we’ve had to arrange this specially to be able to do it with my son.
I was really worried about middle school, and although I’m still sure that we’ll run into bumps in the road, I feel much more confident that this staff will help us sort them out.
Just thought you’d all like to hear about a school that deserves a pat on the back!

Karen,
As a teacher it is great that you are so proactive in your child’s life. As an educator I unfortunately can’t say that too often. I am always looking for accomodations. If I could get the e-mail or website for that school it would help me tremendously. Thanks….P Sloan

Wow,Karen!! What a huge load off your mind:-) Sure as heck makes summer enjoyable, don’t it! Your really should post this on the parenting board, gives us parents out there some hope for the future.
Re: A School that is Thinking
There are a lot of schools doing a lot of good things for kids but when the majority of your responses are to people who can only find fault with the system - it distorts the picture. I’m sure your back would stiffen if your patients were constantly attacking you!

Hi Socks,
I’ve been away for a couple of weeks, but we have our transition team meeting next week. When it’s over, I’ll let you know more, and I’ll post it on the “Parent’s” board!

Our fifth graders have had a sixth grade penpal this year, and also spend a day over at the middle school in June with their classmates(they bus them over); it does help that Scouts and soccer is held at the middle school so many elementary kids have been there already.
