SHARE YOUR SUCCESSES: Bag of tricks

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am looking for any type of home-made tool that you may be using to assist in the student in comprehension, motivation, etc

Your question is rather vague…what age of students are you targeting, what particular skills, what is your teaching environment, and why do they need motivations?

To climb on a personal soapbox….In my opinion, students do not need any special tricks to be motivated if they believe that they can be successful. The trick is to structure instruction so that the students learn that (possibly despite past experiences) they are capable of success.

Okay, I’m climbing down now…I’d love to offer more assistance and actually have a rather large bag of tricks, if you can be more specific.

O.K. Sorry! I am studying special education and will graduate as an Ed. Assistant this year. This is a project we are doing. It could be for any age but I’m partial to primary/elementary.
I’m interested in tools that would benefit “exceptional children” primarily.
An example of a “home made” tool is “The Friendship Circle”. It is designed to help children develop concrete safety skills. It develops an intimacy scale and helps the child in establishing appropriate boundaries when dealing with others.
You cut out 3 colored circles: 1 large red, smaller yellow, smallest is green. The yellow circle is glued on top of red, and green on top of yellow. You can use photos of people in the childs life. Pictures of people that may touch the student intimately like the mother are put in the green circle. Put pictures of people who may touch the student with permission such as doctors, relatives or special friends in the yellow circle.
The red circle would be for other people in the community where a handshake or a pat on the back is appropriate.
So, share some with me!!!!!
