Shay, Please Help!

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’ve posted this message on the Parents BB, but want to post here as well so I can catch up with Shay!

Okay, beginning to feel like I’m going in circles. I have the reading reflex book, but haven’t really used it as we enrolled 10 y/o dd in private LD school using Slingerland. Now feel like school hasn’t met promises due to financial issues, etc. (school is hanging on by thread, director just divorced at 40 yrs marraige, etc…). Anyway, hoping to move dd to private school for none LD (no others available here) but want to make sure we’re on best footing. She’s almost at grade level, but would like to have her on best footing possible, so thought I’d start using the RR to ensure we’ve got the bases covered. Do I need something other than the book to be successful? In addition, I’m considering Step Up To Writing as she has almost no experience in writing. What, other than the manual, would be beneficial? We’ve been doing Great Leaps, although took a month off due to major illness in the family. Planning to start everything back up next week, so am getting things prepared. Guidance would be much appreciated!

I will be responding privately to you. For those that are reading this post, I advocate that along with RR that you use the Super Speller, can be purchased from Read America and along with the manual to Step Up To Writing, you get the Handy Pages. These come in packets of 10 but are not pricey. If any of you order the packet, you can email me and I will buy the other copies or you can share with others that are wanting to use the program. It is an excellent program for teaching creative writing.

You might also want to get the Parent Support Manual from Read America that follows the same sequence of lessons that Reading Reflex uses. It’s a workbook for the student to use and will save you a lot of time creating materials. They have different versions for students of different ages.

I LOVE the Step Up to Writing Program. I am teaching LD 6th graders with this program and have found it to be the best single program I have used. I think it is worth every cent. I was so impressed with it I even bought the entire HOW to Collection ON VIDEO to share with my own children’s school since they had not heard of it yet. I gave it to my son’s teacher who now loves it so much they are going school wide with it next year. The tapes are expensive but if you are a teacher and like the program, you can get teacher “buy in” to do it at each grade level without a school wide inservice which is even more pricey.

I am tutoring a neighbor with this. I just wish I had this when I was in school. It would have made my life easier.

Just looking through the mountains of catologs is daunting. but if you are looking for a good writing program, I recommend this program highly. Also, they do have a parent book but I don’t have it so don’t know if that is any good. I do have all the other parts of the program though. Look at www.stepuptowriting.com

After I found this writing program that helped me so much I decided to look for a reading program that could do the same. I am checking out Phonographix as many of you have talked about and LIPs. There is one teacher I know helping my non-reader student with LindaMood Bell LIPS. The more I learn, the more I find I need to learn. I had a student last summer tutored in LiPs so it made a believer out of me. Here in Arizona we are behind the times so it is great finding this board with lots of fresh ideas.
