Reading Overcoming Dyslexia by Sallly Shaywitz is like rereading several years worth of posts to this board!
I didn’t know much when my daughter was diagnosed but y’all led me thru phonemes, segmenting, blending, cvc patterns, Reading Reflex, Read Natually, Great Leaps. And I certainly learned the questions to ask.
Thanks partly to you, my daughter is more or less on grade level. She probably needs a little finetuning as I hear her mispronounce quite a few high level words this summer but she reads for pleasure and for learning.
A heartfelt thank you to you all.
I’m buying several copies of Shaywitz’s book to hand out. It won’t be as much fun as several years of posts and posters but it is hand to someone.
Thanks again.
Re: Shaywitz's book reiterates everything I learned here.
I have definitely learned more on this board (I went thru the archives also) as well as the manuals by LMB group and the Wilson manual— this maybe has been about two months, than I learned in my whole special ed classes and the rest of my career (25 years), though actually didn’t work that much with ld.
It is a shame that other teachers don’t read it but we do have a number here.

Re: Shaywitz's book reiterates everything I learned here.
I haven’t read the book. But I think I’m getting ready to go get it.
Talk about learning. Me, an avid reader and great speller, adopted a child with a “familly history of dyslexia”. (just figured, “NO problem, I was a great reader, so I can teach her.” - not realizing that reading came naturally to me and I had NO knowledge of the rules or pathways to reading) The experts that frequent this bb took me, a complete novice, and turned me into someone who, altho not an expert, can spot the signs, address the problems, and know WHERE to go for advice when the going gets rough!
Being able to post scores with you Janis, was SO very helpful. Between you and Susan Long, you “pegged” my daughter without having ever met her. I learned more from the 2 of you than I did the original evaluator.
When does the new school year start for you Janis?
Thanks for all your help!
Re: Shaywitz's book reiterates everything I learned here.
You are so sweet, Leah! I am happy if I could be of some help. We have something in common since we both adopted children with reading problems!
I actually had my first two teacher workdays yesterday and today! The kids come next Thursday. I will have a lighter caseload this year, thankfully, and hopefully will be able to give the kids as much time as they need.
I really hardly feel like I’ve been off, though, since I went to three workshops this summer!

Re: Shaywitz's book reiterates everything I learned here.
You HAVEN’T BEEN “off”. You’ve been on this Board helping all these parents with “unrealistic expectations”! :0)
Our teachers went back on Friday, too and we start on Thursday. Jami got a good teacher. Real “hands on” type for Math and Science (which Jami likes best)
Your kids are lucky to have you - and so are we.

Okay, I’m going to have to give Leah a hug:

Thank you!!! And how wonderful that Jami got a good teacher!

I’ll have to agree with you, mmm! I am about 3/4 of the way through the book and it is just a nice summary of all that I learned here, too! I know I have learned more here than I did in my master’s degree, especially in reading. The LD Indepth section certainly has a nice collection of best practice articles and latest research. The sad thing to me is that this is such a terrific resource, but in the overall scheme of things, there surely aren’t many teachers on these boards. That is discouraging because children can’t be helped until they know what we know.
