Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

my son is 9 and has a IEP he is classified SLD.We just got his IEP and it seems to be working good.He also has several dx ADHD,Tourettes,ODD,LD.Now his psy is adding Aspergers to his list. She said he should be able to get more services with this dx.I dont know if this is true or not Can this dx hurt him in school isnt Autusim under a different classification and cant the school take away some of his services like OT,and speech therapy and possibly resource room with this dx.I am afraid to say anything to the school because of this.

Abby,

Why did his psy add the Aspergers dx to his list? I am just curious. Was there a reference to this area reported in his testing? By the way, I would think that with this new dx he should be eligible for more services. Is he in public school?

She said he fits the critera for a autistic disorder. We have done plenty of of forms and checklist and he does fit the profile.Hehas a very high IQ of over 140 .I really dont know why she actually said Aspergers but that is what she did.I was a fraid he would loose the services he already gets.

This whole area can actually be very confusing as so many snydromes have sx’s that overlap. From my reading up on Austic spectrum disorders if a child is dx’d with an autism spectrum disorder if they have ADHD, lanuage disorder, LD and the like they are only given the diagnosis of the spectrum disorder they fit unless the sx’s of the other disorder are more severe then the expression of the spectrum disorder. Some believe that autism spectrum disorders cover a wide spectrum ranging from the mild end of ADHD to the more sever end of classic autism. I am not an expert just a parent who has done extensive reading since my 9 1/2 year old was dx’d with PDD-NOS at age 4.
