son's retest

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Well, my son took the math retest Wed. after spending an entire week with dad going over and over the problems and missing only one question the night before the retest. Well, he bombed the retest. His dad had met with the math teacher on Monday and showed all the work my son had put in prior and she was impressed. He even took the test in resource but told his dad it is just as bad because the kids in there are talking and being distracting. I am planning to call a meeting and see if we can brainstorm about this. My son just doesn’t test very well. I am thinking about maybe asking if he can go in the library or maybe take his tests during the teacher’s planning period, he would be quiet and wouldn’t distract her. It wouldn’t be like it occurred on a daily basis. I just hate to think of all that effort he made (11 pages in one night of homemade problems(dad made) that started at one page on Mon. and accumulated by Sunday with 5 problems per page and he did very well with them) and he still failed the test. She will let him retake the portions that he failed this next week but there has got to be a better way to do this. Any suggestions?

Most teachers have time that they must spend in school before or after classes.

See if your son can take the test in the morning prior to school. The teacher would probably already be there anyway and this would not take away from her planning period. Remember, teachers move around the building during their planning periods.

Also, this way your son will not have to attend classes all day with the anxiety of his upcoming test looming over him. And, he will be more likely to have material fresh in his head.

Interesting problem. Does the teacher set up the test page in a similar way to the 11 pages Dad set up? When you look at the retest he bombed, does it look pretty much as the sample problems his father had him do?

If it does, my best guess is he does get very distracted and maybe very anxious at test taking time. does this happen across the board or just in math?

In any case, your idea sounds like a good one to me.

Unfortunately, I have been the US while my family is in Germany (a wedding), so I haven’t been able to see what’s going on, I have been getting email from my husband about all this.

I do believe my son has test anxiety, he doesn’t test well in just about any situation. Standardized tests are the worst. In his earlier years he made single digit scores on the CAT test and the CoGat test. His 6th grade Terra Nova had good scores where his accommodations were met, but he did really bad on the reading, lang. arts parts where he couldn’t have the test read to him. Although he’s done ok in his other classes, his quiz and test scores aren’t good. Homework and classwork scores keep him from doing too badly.

He and his brother are due adhd checkups when I get back(I’ll be home this Saturday) so I will bring this up to his doc.As well as getting with his teacher.

Thanks for your help.

My son gets to take his test a third time today, gosh I hope it goes well.
I have to give credit to his teacher though for being so willing to see him succeed. We’ve never had this come up before. I’ll let ya know how things go.

Great going for you and your son! It is nice to see them have some success! A little bit of positive goes a long way. I agree it is wonderful how patient the teacher was.
