Hi , I just wanted to ask opinions. For background, my son has had a terrible time learning to read and was finally found eligible for sped for lang.arts and reading in the 4th grade. He spent all year of 5th grade in resource for these subjects and did well in all his classes( a lot of teachers did a good job of keeping up with him). He is in 6th, included this year with support in some classes, actually has made B honor roll twice. His grades fluctuate through the terms but his last report card stated a B+ in Lang. Arts and a C+ in reading.
The Terra Nova states 25 to 75 as average(the shaded area). He has a 16 in reading, a 15 in lang. arts and a 37 in math. However, he has a 60 in science, and a 35 in social studies. The test didn’t include the last 2 scores so his total was a 21.He had accommodations for this test except the teacher couldn’t read the reading, lang. arts parts(I understood why).
He seems to be doing well in classwork, and he did ok on the parts he didn’t need to read and comprehend. I worry that maybe he should be back in resource for more intensive remediation of what seems to be a lack of comprehension skills in his reading.
He has never done well on standardized tests(he admits now that he made patterns of the ovals in the past). So I don’t know if it is just the tests and I shouldn’t worry too much, or if he really hasn’t improved as much as it seems as far as class work. I have read his journals for Lang Arts, he writes very funny, coherent stories(What if my brother was a tub of lard?) but you have to bypass the misspellings and lack of punctuation. His Kaufman test stated him as average with slow processing speed and weak in his reasoning skills. It found no deficits only a ‘learning difference’. I guess I just still feel like something is amiss. I don’t want him to be one of those kids who graduates high school and doesn’t know how to read well enough to get along in the world.
I have to apologize, boy do I ramble on.Thanks for your patience y’all.
