Speech ? Has anyone ever heard of this, PLEASE?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have no idea if this is the right place to post this question, so if I’m in the wrong place, please let me know.

My son has always had a stammering problem. He uses a lot of filler pauses like “ah, ah, ah, and, and, and”, and weird endings like repeating the last part of word, “for instance “like, ike, ike.” He took some speech therapy for stuttering and it did help some, but not much.

My main concern right now is his habit of talking in dangling modifers, or screwing up the word order in his sentences. The doctors can’t explain this. Here’s a sample:

” I just read in the paper, <long pause> an article”…..long pause and the goes into his explanation which also has lots of ums, ahs etc.

“I just bought at new coat at the store, <long pause> made of leather.”

“Pick up it”

“Put back it”

“Three, one or two” instead of one, two and three

WHAT IS THIS!!!!!!! Sometimes he does this in his writing as well. Although he knows to look for these errors in writing, he can’t get past it in his speech. It’s like he has mini black outs in his thinking. Is there such a LD as a grammar disorder or is this some sort of expressive disorder related to the speech?

Thanks,
Andrea

I am 23 and I am able to say what I want when I write (after awhile), but for some reason, I just can’t speak. I stutter, stammer, pause, use fillers (such as like, um, uh, ah, I don’t know, well, etc.). I stall a lot too. This usually happens if I’m caught off guard (which REALLY irritates me), am nervous, or am unsure of what to say or how to explain something. I feel like such an idiot! Does this happen to everyone? I am 23 and still talk like a teenager! It may just be a habit, but I’m absolutely frightened that this problem will screw me up. I messed up in an interview because of this. (It was one of my first, so of course I was quite nervous). This is so embarrassing. I am finding it hard to get help for this problem because people might not understand me. They say “oh, just relax. You’re nervous.” or “slow down” ‘cause sometimes I AM in a hurry. I don’t know what to do.
Anyone wanna drop any hints? Please do.
Colleen

Sounds like a word retrieval problem. Can co-exist with stuttering. You can look up word retrieval. There are some therapy’s that can help with this.
