Spelling Program

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Do any of you know of any good remedial spelling programs for learning disabled students? I just ordered the Stetson Spelling Program…is it any good?

I don’t know about Stetson. We are really liking Sequential Spelling from http://www.avko.org. It is based on the old Glass Analysis approach to reading. Seems to be working for my dyslexic daughter, unlike the previous 4 spelling programs we tried. It’s easy to use, too.

Unless things have changed since I bought this, it is nothing more than a high frequency word list of about 1000 words. Whoopee!

Are you talking about the Stetson Program or the Sequential Spelling?

The Avko website has a sample of its approach — 8 days of lessons that demonstrate how a student learns to spell the word “beginning”. Sequential Spelling does use word lists, but the words are organized by spelling pattern, not by frequency of use (although that is taken into consideration somewhat).

I couldn’t find Stetson anywhere on the net.
