Stevenson Reading Program

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Has anyone had experience with the Stevenson Reading Program? My district recommended I use Stevenson but am having trouble figuring out how to generalize the procedure to standard reading material. I teach students with severe language impairments as well as severe processing difficulties. They completed the first part of the SRA program with little success. I don’t really have access to the Linda Moodbell or Orton programs. My students are approximately 3rd-4th grade and non-readers. Any input would be appreciated!

My son had Stevenson in first and second grade. I fought the school about it in second and eventually pulled him out and taught him myself using phonographix. When he returned in third grade with a new teacher, he was the only one in resource room who could really read.

Obviously I don’t like the program. It may be useful as a supplemental program but one big problem is that it teaches the long vowels first. Kids can not read any normal material. The stories and sentences are nonsense which irritated my concrete kid, who already didn’t like reading. It uses menomics (spelling), which for my kid with memory problems was not helpful.

I would suggest phonographix as an less expensive alternative to O-G or LIPS. You will be much more successful with it than Stevenson.
