As far as your class goes, you probably can’t say that to the professor; use your own reading skills, go over your text and your notes and find a creative way to feed his own ideas back.

Then please, if you are going to be working with middle-school non-readers, read the real scientific research (start with NIH/NICHD study on teaching reading) and find out how to do some real good for your students.
