Strategies for Written Language

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello,

I am looking for information on a writing technique. I read of a program called ” Handwriting Without Tears”. Where can I find this information online? So I can learn exactly what this program offers. I am also going to request that my son’s IEP include assistive technology such as a laptop. Are there any specific programs designed for an OT to use in teaching a child? I am aware of spell check, phonotics in typing, and other editing techniques. I am most interested in the best program that his OT can use to make the learning of words and the phonotics simplified. Thank you for taking the time to review my request.

Sincerely,
DT and TT’s Mom

You can find Handwriting without Tears at http://www.hwtears.com.

I use it with my son and it has been very helpful. He is learning to write correctly, when to use upper case and lower case. The book really helps becuase it gives him a visual of what to do, step by step, instead of me trying to explain it.

I am not sure on the Ot programs. I can tell you that if you request a laptop, you might want the OT or someone to work on typing. A good at home typing program is Read, Write, and Type. Your son will be less frustrated with AT if he knows how to type. Even if he can only peck with two fingers, it will be faster than writing.
