Hi all,
Just had an interview at a Albuquerque Public school for a resource
room position. I moved here from Illinois. So naturally I asked re:
student teacher ratio.
Well apparently they are taking like 19 kids at a time! This is
resource?! I was just floored. I did a resource rm years ago.
I had 3-4 kids at a time. I just about said that that’s what
I thought the ratio should be with normal kids. Maybe I heard
wrong, like how many kids thru the day, but no I asked about
that and it is something like 64 +.
Yikes! I guess I am going to go charter or private.
Actually was going to do a tutoring practice but thought a couple
years f-t pay would be nice. Maybe I will change that idea.

[quote=”Janis”]Well, des, look at it this way. You can be absolutely sure they aren’t teaching LD kids ANYTHING in a situation like that, so your private practice should do quite well.
NO WAY would I enter a situation with a caseload that high.

Me neither Janis!
Teaching wouldn’t even be an issue, it would be ADHD crowd control :-}
BTW, talked to a few private schools. They commented that they usually don’t get kids til around the 1-3 months into the term when the kids start melting down or bombing out.

My goodness. I’ll bet the private schools do well there, too!
Good luck and let us know what you decide to do!

There aren’t that many private schools that will take ld kids around here. There are quite a few private prep type schools and you wouldn’t believe the no. of Montessori schools that go all the way up to 6th grade (some beyond). I imagine some take special needs kids but as you know they have their own system. The Southwest really goes for things like Montessori, martial arts, acupuncture, etc. There are a handful of what are public charter schoools. They basically told me that they don’t know the needs of the kids til a bit later (seems like some of that would be included in the info but they are required to take special needs kids— just not keep them as I hear). Curious system anyway.
I can’t imagine how the kids do here, but apparently not very well. I have heard that the literacy rate here is quite appallling. This is a poor state and it seems they are just going to perpetuate that condition.
