Suggestions for informal reading assessment?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

What reading assessments do you use and where do you purchase them? I have the QRI (Qualitative Reading Inventory) and the San Diego Quick (word lists). When I remediate in reading, I often want to assess every few months to check for improvement in fluency, comprehension, and reading level. The QRI is great, but the levels are only by grade - not very good at measuring small gains.

I work on my own in a small practice - can’t afford to buy a big expensive test (like the DRA, which I know has small increments of reading levels).

Curriculum Based Measurement tests can be given for reading fluency. The Basic Reading Inventory is a quick look at fluency and oral/silent comprehension. You should be able to contact your local Educational Service Unit or Area Education Agency to obtain materials to borrow or copy.
