Summer activities

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Any recommendations for activities to be sent home for students with learning disabilities (4th/5th grade) to do over the summer? I know these would need to be learner specific, but I wondered if there are any resources available so that I don’t have to reinvent the wheel.

They don’t have to be learner specific. Many LD kids have issues with reading and writing. I’d recommend - even if it doesn’t get done - that someone read outloud in the less busy summer time 1/2 a day to every child. I’d also recommend that each child read 1/2 hour a day - read anything at all. Comic books even just so they keep reading. I’d also recommend a summer journal or diary - a few lines every day - spelling shouldn’t count - just to keep the writing juices flowing. Tell them the pleasant truth which is that many, many studies show that children who are read outloud to - even if it’s only in the summer - become better readers and do better in school. Tell them that many, many studies show that 1/2 of reading every day - even comic books - make us better readers.

For those with computers, they could go to www.funbrain.com and practice their math and for anybody who’s bored in the summer, go to www.brainpop.com.

Many local libraries have summer reading programs and weekly reading clubs. You could recommend that they join these.

The other recommendation I make is sometimes to get the books for the year ahead and read ahead. For those of my weak reader students who do that, it can make a big differences in their success level in the following year.
