support

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son was identified with LD in reading and writng at the start of second grade. We live overseas and he attends an international school that has no support or services for children with special needs. He didn’t get any help for most of the second grade year. Near the end of that year, I had him pulled from the required Mandarin class (they start teaching Mandarin in first grade) and also for his reading/LA time and gave him intensive help in reading using the Beth Slingerland method. We contunued that through the summer and through most of last year. He completed all three of her levels. I went in during his third grade year and gave assistance during the LA part of the day and as well as giving him remediation in reading, writing and spelling. Now in fourth grade, I am spending the entire day at school giving him assitance. He is reading at about mid-second grade. He has no IEP and the teachers just basically do whatever I ask them to do for him. My concern is that we’re doing too much or not enough. Since there is no support, I have no one to bounce ideas off of. I’m doing alot of his writing for him—being used as his scribe. I think he may have dysgraphia as writing is very difficult and he is all over the page, mixing capitals with lower case, etc. I’ve read quite alot about using computers but the school provides nothing…Can anyone make some suggestions of what I should be doing with him? I’m using Great Leaps Reading program and also the McCraken Spelling. He gets most of his tests read to him. He does quite well if everything could be verbal. Any suggestions? I don’t want to be doing too much but want to do enough so he doesn’t get frustrated with school and life in general. Up to this point he has had a GREAT attitude. Thanks for any responses.

Lots of ideas, but I seem to be repeating myself. Email me and I’ll send some things directly.
