Support Groups

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am starting a child and parent support group in the fall. It will be the first of it’s kind in our area. The idea came after unsuccessfully finding a children’s group that would offer more than just a therapy program. My son is in need of new friends and some self confidence. While searching for such a group I found that I wasn’t alone, and that many parents and support groups were in need of a program like this. My sister who grew up with a learning disability through school and is a college grad in Occupational Therapy has decided to join in as co-founder. We have reached and received many informational advisory material and are in the process of agendas, etc. We are recruiting college students and other appropriate volunteers that will be giving their time in the planning and actual meetings. We want to implement types of self-esteem, self confidence, sharing, encouragement activities as well as bring in speakers and exercises that will help the children learn of all their opportunities. If there is anyone that already conducts such a support group for children, I would love any advise and input you can share with us.
