Talking Word Processors

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am an early childhood special ed teacher and volunteered to help our LD teacher write up a grant for some assistive technology material for her students. I have seen Write:OutLoud as a Windows program, but wondered if anyone has used the Dana with Write:OutLoud To Go. Is it a good investment for helping third and forth grade SLD students to be sucessful in writtn expression? Is it like Alpha Smart? Is it easy to use? Thanks for any help.

There are possibly many options but it depends upon what the difficulties are with written expression. Can you give us more information? You don’t fit the student to the available technology. You assess the student’s needs first and then make recommendations.

It would be a good help if you tailored the instruction to it. I’ll bet there are some ideas online for that (or perhaps for purchase). Have you been to the alphasmart website? There’s a discussion board there tho’ I don’t know how active.

I know some teachers have put things together with, I believe Draft Builder and Co:Writer. The Don Johnston site might have ideas too… or you could tag along at the Technology, Reading and LEarning Difficulties conference and see what they have to say about it …
