Teaching Algebra to ESE students

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Does anyone know where I can find information, books, etc. on teaching Algebra to LD students (ie. hands-on activities, new ways of teaching the same thing, etc.)? Thanks!

I’m researching that right now. The Brits have more on Maths and Dyslexia than on this side of the pond… there’s a good book by Chinn and AShcroft with a title like “Dyslexia and Mathematics - a teaching handbook”

The article on this site by Kate Garnett is a good one for understanding how LDs affect learning math.

You might want to check www.borenson.com and “hands-on math” — that scale metaphor is about the best concrete connection to equations I know of. I haven’t used those materials (just thought of the same connection independently) but I suspect they’d be a good starting point.

When I’m working with students, keeping them connected with what equations mean is really important. It also really helps me to figure out if they’re a “step-by-step” thinker or a “big picture” thinker, because telling the big picture person a bunch of steps adds to their confusion but makes sense to the steppers; giving other similar examples can make a big picture guy have light bulbs go on… while the step-by-step0 thinker gives you that glazed, frustrated look…
