teaching in an gr. 7/8 E-ABLE (lifeskills) classroom

I just found out I will be teaching grade 7/8 E-ABLE (lifeskills) classroom in September. These students will be integrated into the mainstream classes as much as possible, but a few will be primarily with me. I need ANY & ALL suggestions (effective lesson plans, classroom management, etc) I can get as this a very new experience for me (coming from a “regular” grade 1 position)….I’ve been told that a few of these students have behavioral issues but that hasn’t been a major concern…I’m looking forward to hearing ideas from many of you experienced / seasoned teachers…thank you in advance!

It will be different for you coming from a regular 1st grade classroom to a 7/8th grade class. These students have many isues similar to their regular 7/8th grade students that you may not be used to.

Building success in academics and social skills with patience and consistency will pay off in the long run with an increase in development
and behavior.

I would look over the students’ IEPs and then plan the lessons. Hands on concrete lessons work with projects and stations os that the work can be individualized.

Hi Alice

Yes, the leap from grade one to a 7/8 spec ed class is going to be quite a challenge! I have had some extensive background experience working with profoundly DD children but this class is something entirely different - mainly comprised of students with MID & multiple LDs….I have found this site extremely helpful in terms of reassurance that I’m on the right track with some of my (vague & amateur :) )ideas! I’m hoping that some workshops over the summer may also ease my mind. In the meantime, I’m searching for a high-interest low-vocabulary novel that is appropriate for gr 7/8….any suggestions, anyone?? Tips for grouping students for the novel study??
