TEACHING LIFE SKILLS FOR 4th-7th IN ONE CLASS

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have been put into a classroom to teach Life skills for students 4th through 7th grade for the first time. In the past, the teacher only used workbooks mainly, but they are now wanting more hands on projects for the students… I am at a total loss for ideas or where to even start….could any one out there be of help to me or be able to point me in the right direction??? Thanks

Meredith

Welp, first thing I wuold do is get MONEY. The universal “life skill,” after all :(
THere are lots of good “manipulativ” lessons online — toss in some key words and “lesson” into Mr. Google or Yahoo and see who coughs. (‘subtraction lessons manipulatives’ might be a good starting point.)

Money is essential if these students are ever to live with any degree of independence, but I’d also suggest skills such as dialing their home phone # and communicating their home address and phone number to someone who doesn’t know them.

Also, learning to cross the street safely, ride the bus, and buy food at the grocery store or a restaurant are all skills that the students will need to transition to adult life.

Finally, I’d stress survival words in the reading curriculum.

Good luck!
