Technology Devices

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Can schools help children receive technology devices? Such as something that will help an eight year old that is having difficulties with reading, writting, math and has been diagnosed with a learning disability. At his I.E.P. I expressed the fact that I felt that a learning device would assist him with his school.Such as a computer,or an Alpha Smart or something that phonics could be downloaded in.

I work for a school district and as you know on the IEP for a student that is receiving a special service or related service we must consider Assistive Technology as a part of the IEP for the student. We have a process to define a problem and then look at ways to address the problem and consider what would assist the student. We have a way through a coalition our school district works with to trial devices and assistive technology with a student. For example, we would look at an alphasmart for a student and trial it for a period of time to see if it was assisting the area of need the team discussed. We also trial softeware for a student and computer adaptations as the Intellikeys and the software that goes with it, Intellitalk II. Continue to look into your issues.
