Time problems

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Does anybody have good suggestions for teaching time concepts? I am working with an LD student who has no trouble adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing with regular numbers, but time problems just totally throw her off.

She especially struggles with elapsed time.

I don’t know how much of it is computational problem (base 60), and how much might just be lack of problem-solving skills.

Anybody have techniques that work well for this topic?

Thanks in advance!

Do you have a sand timer? They sometimes come with board games. Maybe seeing time elapse, in a sense, as the sand runs through the timer might help her.

What about an egg timer? You can actually see the hands moving on the egg timer.

Can she tell time? Even with a digital watch? Ask her to guess at how much time it will take for you to walk from one side of the room to the other. Then time it with a watch.

Good luck.
