tips for my mum!

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi! I’m from Melbourne, Australia. My mum has been asked recently to be a teahers aide for my aunty who suffered a rare brain virus thingy and now has brain damage. It’s mainly her memory that’s effected. My mum (Robyn) and my aunty (Carol) go to TAFE (like uni, but smaller) twice a week.. Mainly to tackle subjects like Oral Communication, Maths, computers, etc. Mum is struggling to give Carol the right advice and is not really sure the best way she can help. Can anyone give me some tips to pass on or suggest a site that offers help for helpers!?

Thanks for your time,
Kim

Just thought I should add, Carol gets very upset when she doesn’t know what to do (clings to mum, cries, even says she wants to die sometimes!) It’s quite upsetting to both Mum and Carol. We just want to boost her confidence.

I can’t remember the exact virus, but as I said, it’s mainly her memory. She remembers who her family members are, but can’t remember their names. She can write but not read very well. She used to take French lessons and every now and then, she comes out with French words, but doesn’t remember learning it!

Anyway, as I said, any help would be very grateful.
Take care
Kim
