transition

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have a third grade student who did not qualify for special ed. at her 3 year re-eval. She will be placed into regular ed. at the beginning of next year. She is going to have problems with the amount of written work that will be required of her. How can I help her for the rest of this school year to prepare her for next year?

This will definitely be an issue for you and for your child. I am a fourth grade teacher and I know that the transition between third and fourth grades is often difficult for the best of students. My advice for you is to give her more responsibilities at home, feeding pets, cleaning her room, whatever things that you think she is capable of handling. You may also try to get her accustomed to keeping a day planner with all of her assignments in it. As always, make sure that she has a good working knowledge of any math facts you can get her familiar with, and provide as many meaningful reading experiences as you can. If you start these things now, I think that it will help her in the future. Good Luck!!!

Just a thought (I’m just a mom), but we have my daughter do chores and have a “to do” list with a notebook and schedule for the summer when I’m at work and she’s home with older brother. It gets her used to the organization and schedule and might make your daughter more adaptable when gen ed starts.
