Virtual Classroom

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am the Executive Director of the Joshua Child and Family Development Center, a non-profit organization which support programs designed to improve the lives of children with neurological disorders, including Tourette Syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Asperger Syndrome. A great deal of these children have learning disabilities. I quit teaching 5 years ago to start the center, named after my son. We are now an Outreach Clinic for Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. I have observed over 500 children at school and realize these children need to get their education utilizing computers, not using them as a reward as is so often the case. I am developing a Virtual Classroom, starting out with remediation in math and reading. So often I find these children are several years behind in these areas. I am in the process of developing a survey for our website. Please consider visting our site at www.joshucenter.com and submit your name, email address and comments. We received a grant to purchase this incredible software and after working with several children in our Education Center I am convinced of the Virtual Classroom concept. Learning should be exciting for these children and great interactive software motivates children to learn. They need to succeed. I can be reached at [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from everyone.

Hello,
I am very interested in finding out about the software you have been using. I teach reading in Special Education resource classes at Johnston High School in Austin,Texas. At the end of last year, I received a classroom grant from the Dell Corp. to apply to technology and technology-related supplies or training.

My grant involved researching and integrating virtual field trips into reading instruction. Most of my students are from underpriviledged Hispanic families, and have very limited vocabularies and knowledge of our world. I do a lot of direct remedial reading instruction with Orton Gillingham based methods, but my students need MORE than skills to help them become really literate. ….and time is so short for them. Please let me know what you have discovered. I have not found a good resource of info in this area in Central Texas.

thank you,
Judy Butler

Hello,
I am a resource teacher. Most of my caseload is LD, but I also get some ADD and EH kids. I am interested in knowing more about your virtual classroom. I have three IBM computers which have been donated to my room. I am lucky enough to work in the soma building with our district’s augmentative specialist. She has started me in the WYNN reading program. I hope to have it in full swing this year. I also hope to have a voice recognition program is place. I have a student teacher so we may be able to get the voice training done on a few kids.
What else do you do and can we implement this on state wide testing as an IEP modification?

I couldn’t access the virtual classroom but I’d be very interested in seeing it.
Could you post the link?
