What is the best rdg. program for practice at home.

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am looking for an effective reading program to practice phonics and early reading at home. We read together every day, but I would like to know about a recommended program that has proven results.

A great book is called “Reading Reflex” by Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness (@ $12.75 at Amazon) which is the Phono-Graphix method of teaching reading. It would provide an excellent foundation in reading skills for any child. It is actually designed for parents to teach their children how to read, but it has been so successful that many teachers and reading tutors are using it as well. You can read more information on the Read America web-site:

… this would be to do while you’re practicing the reading — to help the reader connect the phonics and the reading — it’s at http://www.resourceroom.net/Products/tandem.asp

I basically put what I do in the oral-reading section of a lesson with kids I tutor into a booklet. You take turns reading with your kid and put some structure into it so that the phonics doesn’t go away because it’s a story, and it helps with learning all those common words that are irregular, and may not show up in a phonics program.

So absolutely no proven results except my anecdotes :)
