This is long and I’ll try my best to condense. The biggest issue is that the experts disagree which doesn’t help me in the slightest!
My son is 14 (9th grade, homeschooled). Delayed in most things when young (fine & gross motor, speech, etc). Diagnosed as dyslexic and PDD-NOS when young.
Retested recently. IQ score has been deemed “uninterpretable” due to huge discrepancies between total IQ (low) and verbal (high).
One psychologist feels he is autistic and non-verbal learning disorder.
Another feels he is ADHD.
Both agree on a visual processing disorder and both think the dyslexia is borderline. Both agree that he has cognitive skill issues. He definitely processes things slowly but he is very verbal and comes across as highly intelligent because he can talk his way through anything. lol He has a poor working memory but an unbelievable long term memory.
Academic performance shows he is at or above grade level in listening comprehension, oral expression, word reading, oral reading fluency, and sentence composition. He is between a 6th and 7th grade level in all mathematics areas and reading comprehension. Spelling is 4th grade and pseudo-word decoding is 2nd. grade.
He is going to start interactive metronome therapy next week. Other than that, there weren’t any other suggestions given.
We homeschool so I am willing to try almost any user friendly program on the market but I don’t know where to start. I’ve looked at Idea Chain and The Listening Program but I don’t have a clue if these are the right programs for him. Heck, I’m not even sure what I am trying to accomplish! I guess I am trying to improve his academic performance and make learning easier instead of the constant struggle it seems to be. He is easily distracted and unorganized. He can write a very good paper one day and something that is on the level of a 2nd. grader the next day and doesn’t seem to see the difference. One day he understands everything and the next he seems lost and confused. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
