What to Teach a 2nd Grader

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi,
My son may be attending a private school for reading and math instruction but the other subjects I have to homeschool him in. What other subjects are covered in the 2nd grade? How should I go about teaching him these subjects? Thanks in advance.

Greetings Andrea,

Quite frankly, I wouldn’t teach him any other subjects! I would spend the homeschool time supporting his reading and math instruction through various reading, language and math activities and games. If you wanted to address other subjects, you could read simple biographies of important historical men and women or do simple science experiements. If you want something more specific, I would suggest reading the book “The Well Trained Mind” by Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer. It outlines a complete course of study from K -12. In particular, I like how they address the issue of writing and have begun using that with my daughter. You might also want to check out The Core Knowledge Series “What Your 2nd Grader Needs To Know” (books for grades 1-6). Both of these books have websites with lots of good info. Another favorite book of mine is “Homeschool Your Child For Free: More Than 1,200 Smart, Effective, and Practical Resources for Home Education on the Internet and Beyond” by LauraMaery Gold and Joan Zielinski.

Hope this helps!

Blessings, momo
