Which reading test?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Working on IEP for meeting tomorrow. First grade son is finishing first grade. He is in dyslexia program. It is a structured, sequential program based upon O-G (similar to Alphabetic Phonics in many ways). He has completed 1/3 of the course and can complete the rest next school year.

For next years’ IEP I want to ask for some sort of standardized reading test. In past, he had WJ-R.

He has no problem with reading comprehension. When he was tested with WJ-R last summer, he scored at 9th percentile in basic reading and at 79th percentile in comprehension.

On recent testing (dyslexia test), there were some passages that he read at an instructional level, but his comprehension
was near perfect.

Therefore, I want to make sure that any reading test that he does tests his reading of both regular and irregular words but that the score is not artificially too high based upon his comprehension.

What standardized reading test would best be able to give a result which is really checking his ability to read individual words?

I like the Test of Word Reading Efficiency (TOWRE) because it measures the ability to read real words and nonsense words in isolation. The SLOSSON is good for reading real words in isolation.
