WIATT II and Lindamood Auditory Conceptualization Test

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Is there much of a difference between the WIATT II Pseudoword Decoding Test and the Lindamood Auditory Conceptualization Test? I have scores for both and was wondering since the school doesn’t have anyone trained to do the LAC Test, that the Pseudoword Decoding Test in if the WIATT II would be sufficient. My child had a raw score of 61 on the LAC minimum score for 1st and 2nd grade level and the WIATT showed GE of 2:0 and my child is now in 7th grade. Also they have someone that can work with my child with Linamood techniques ( which I believe is lips), but since I have been using Barton and up to the 4th book and she is having trouble making the multisyllable words come out right (not blending first and second syllable together easily), so I am not sure if this person can help as I thought lips was the basic sounds and she knows those except having hard time blending. Thanks for any info.

Those are two different kinds of tests. The pseudoword decoding test has the child read a list of nonsense words which measures their decoding skills. The LAC test measures phonemic awareness. The LiPS program goes beyond just sounds and teaches decoding skills of syllables and words. Generally some Seeing Stars would be added in to make a complete decoding program.

I am not sure what your question is, though, when you ask if the WIAT test is sufficient. Sufficient for what?

Sufficient to find out all areas my child still lacks in, so we can make sure we address them and move forward. Thanks for explaining, it does sound like I should have the LAC done. Well it sounds like maybe this might work out with the Lindamood trained paraeducator as well. Thanks for the info.

Actually the CTOPP (Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing) is the other test to consider in addition to the LAC. But I am not sure it will actually serve the purpose of guiding instruction, if that is your purpose. I think a real and nonsense word decoding survey is the better tool for designing instruction. That will show you the sounds the child needs to work on. The LAC and CTOPP will confirm that your child has phonological processing problems and provide you with standard and percentile scores. Here is a link to a couple of free informal decoding surveys which would be useful for guiding instruction:

Well then, maybe I don’t really need the school to do the LAC test. Would there be any benefit to her taking the LAC? I was thinking it would show improvement from the last test and how much she needed the Orton- Gillingham type of reading instruction.

I think there is no doubt that a 7th grader reading at 2nd grade level has a severe reading disorder. You don’t need another LAC to confirm that. I think the question is, how can you put together a very intensive remedial program for her. She does need one-on-one, but I’d question having a paraeducator doing it. I’d find out about her training and experience.
