writing a goal-need some help!!!!

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have an 8th grade student who tested at
Verbal 71
Performance 82
Full Scale 75

As of 5-1-00, his reading comprehension and spelling was at a 3.5-4.5 level. Since that time, he has been in junior high, which means total inclusion of reading and writing skills. Next year he will be in high school and I have a hard time writing goals and objectives for him. I do not know what his reading level is currently because he has been fully included (except math). Any thoughts, suggestions on this? Please help me. IEP is tomorrow and the father hates this school and had me in tears last year. I need to be more prepared. Thanks.

This student (who hopefully has had similar testing and scores in the past) is a slow learner; I think these are the students who have lost the most since interventions(aimed at inclusion and catch up strategies) for LD kids have taken off; a reading level of 4-5th grade is not inappropriate for this cognitive level; these types of students will not “catch up” with their peers…the gap will widen in hs; is tech/vocational ed. available? This is a student who should have a transition plan, and up-dated academic/achievement testing.

When was this student tested? If recently, and if it was considered in line with prior testing, this student has borderline intelligence(average is 90-110), and expectations for such a student are very different from students with LD.
