Writing a Letter to Parent

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering what exactly a teacher (kindergarten through third grades) should write to a parent informing them that their child could possibly have a LD. What are all the specific areas that should be covered in the letter? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I just joined this forum so sorry it took so long, but i dont think you should write them a letter, you should tlak to them in person or on the phone. Tell them what you have seen and ask them if they have seen anything also. Then try and get the child tested so you could provide the appropriate accomidations. Good lUck! Beware that some parents will not beleive you becuase they do not want to believe there is something wrong wiht their child

I too would ask for the parents to come in for a meeting of the minds so to speak. Make sure you have documented data to back up what you are seeing. Have the child’s papers at the ready. You may even want to have your school districts information/consent forms ready for their signature. Talk to the school psych, and social worker. Please I beg, have the school do a complete psycho/educational evaluation on this child. A complete one, not just a screening. This may further complicate things later, and let the child get further behind as you wait for the results.

I commend you for wanting to help this child. I know it is your job, but you must be one special teacher to want to do this.

Also, yes, some people do not want your child labeled… Let them know what services are available, and tell them that labeling their child doesn’t mean that their child is dumb, it means that their child may just learn differently, and you want to know what that way is…
