Hi! I could use some advice on whether there are any writing programs appropriate for the secondary level. I teach in Virginia, where our 11th graders are required to pass a writing SOL (prompt) for graduation. Any ideas?

Diana H. King’s “Writing SKills for the Adolescent” (http//www.rlac.com is one source); for a ground-up writing course (but not teachign to teh Sacred Test) try When They Can’t Write by Charlotte MOrgan (http://www.yorkpress.com)

I agree about Charlotte Morgan’s program. I have it and have used it successfully. Also, the Univ. of Kansas Learning Strategies are really good, especially the Sentence Writing Strategy. It may be the single best thing I have ever taught.
Where in Virginia do you teach? I used to live there…and miss it sometimes…and now live outside Seattle, WA.

Shay, who sometimes posts here, has successfully used Step Up to Writing by Sopris West to get 11th graders to pass the VA SOL’s.

Institute for Excellence in Writing is a good one. Website is http://www.writing-edu.com/index.phtml . This is used mostly by homeschoolers, but often in a co-op setting (classroom).
