Your Favorite Creative Writing Program

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’m interested in hearing what your favorite program(s) are.

I’m looking into “Step Up to Writing” and “Institute for Excellence in Writing. www.writing-edu.com

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

There’s an entire list devoted to Institute for Excellence in Writing. The list name is IEWfamilies. You can join at http://www.groups.yahoo.com (list membership is free) and read the archived messages. I think this is what I want to use with my 10yo dd once we get through basic grammar and basic spelling. It has gotten a lot of good comments from homeschoolers at http://www.vegsource.com, the Reading and Math board.

You could do a search on Step up to Writing at Vegsource — there are probably comments about it there.

Are you planning to use this in a classroom setting? I think the IEW course would work very well that way, from the comments I have read about it.

One other program I plan to use is Inspiration, the software program that offers graphic organizers for writing. It has gotten a lot of raves from professional teachers and tutors on these boards. I believe the website is http://www.inspiration.com

Thanks for your response. I’m planning to use it at home with my 8 year old son. I’m looking for something that doesn’t require a lot of thinking on my part. Not my strong suit.

Step up to writing is wonderful, easy to use and good with all writers- but especially those to whom writing is a chore. We use it in Philadelphia and the results have been amazing!

I am planning to work with my son on improving writing skills this summer. Where can I get more information about “Step up to Writing”?

It is available at www.sopriswest.com

I am leaning toward the Institute for Excellence in Writing because it separate the “how to write” from the “what to write”.

Does anyone else have experience with both programs?
