should i report this?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I got the IEP notice this week the list attendees, the sped teacher. That is it. My son will be changing schools next year, he has a speech teacher, reg. 4th grade teacher for non academics, he doesn’t see any other special ed people.

According to the info I have it legally is supposed to be a team meeting. I did put a note on the form that I want the SLP. Same teacher did the same thing last year and had my son’s reg ed teacher sign off.

I will be glad to be out of that place. Should I keep the peace or report the school for not being in compliance?

If making them follow the rules means that a few more people get to sit in on the meeting and watch you sign something, I wouldn’t make them attend.

I would, however, document it *afterward* with a letter of understanding. In it you summarize what you’ve agreed to (or not) and what you expect… and finish by thanking the sped teacher for attending and saying that you understand the other teachers will review and sign the IEP.

Being out of compliance really doesn’t do anything unless somebody along the chain of command actually cares — that info is good ammo in due process, though, *if* you’ve got documentation (so you’d want to send that letter certified and make ‘em sign that they got it).

I had many IEP meetings with just the parent because it really was just a “sit & sign” deal. THe parents knew & didn’t mind. I could be more honest w/ ‘em without administrators around.

For heavens sake tell the teacher who you would like to have at your son’s conference and tell her to let you know when it is arranged. Any parent of a child in general education would do this without any thought of legalities and compliance.

You need to have the special ed teacher, the regular ed teacher, and speech, if necessary. The special ed teacher can also be the “administrator” also. If your son is changing schools, sometimes the new teacher will be there, but not always.
