"Words in Color " reading program

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Has anyone used or heard of a program for reading called “Words in Color”? It consists of a chart with color coding that teaches vowel sounds. Apparently it has been around along time, but I had never heard of it until this month. A mother that I spoke with said she had her child studying Lindamood Lips for 18 months with little success, then when she switched to Words in Color he improved incredibly.

Not to be too skeptical, but my guess is that the sudden improvement was due to all that intensive LiPS work “clicking” with an approach from a slightly different angle (the “words in color.”) I’d bet that without the LiPS it wouldn’t have happened.

Words in Color by Caleb Gattegno is an oldy but a moldy…It stresses more of a visual/orthography sightword approach vs. an auditory phonemic awareness approach. Yes, kids did learn to read using this program, but it is out of date. I agree with Sue that the kid finally put it all together and got lots of practice reading in context. Some programs Bold print certain vowels and tricky orthography so that student associate a particular combination of letters to a particular sound. I have attached a link where you can read more about Words in Color

Thanks for responding Sue and Pattim. It is hard to get info on some of these older programs that some schools are still using, so I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
