Grammar-English for LD kids

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

We are searching for a quality grammar, spelling, vocabulary, language arts Software program to install for a middle schooler and a 3rd grader at home. They read at grade level but these other issues are a real Bear to fix. We would be grateful for any ideas or comments on programs available.

Check out _When They Can’t WRite_ at www.yorkpress.com . IT may be too easy but it starts from the ground up and worries less about getting the correct term for things like subjects and predicates and independent clauses, and more about seeing patterns that are right and using models to help you make up your own. It’s used at the college-prep school for LD kids where I once taught and it works quite well with them.

Muchas Gracias, it sounds like a great text to use. I was also looking for tutorial software that reinforces basic English skills and addresses spelling. We have used the Language Tutor and it was helpful, but quite boring though. Is there an LD software catalog that I could access?

THere’s a fair amount of severely mediocre software available. Two that I rather like are Lexia Learning’s (www.lexialearning.com) reading software which does a great job of reinforcing reading and spelling (but mostly reading) and Word Workshop (http://www.thewordworkshop.com/) which is a fairly cheap and simple practice with learning to sound out the longer words, with strategies for figuring them out from the back to the front.
