I am interested in hearing what other teachers think about the Project Read program. Have you found it to be successful with your students. I have an opportunity to attend some training for this program and I would appreciate any information on its effectiveness with special education students.
Re: Project Read
Our district implemented PR in every classroom K-3 to fill the gaping hole left by our reading series for teaching systematic phonics. It has been very effective. Then the Title One teachers reinforce PR for the children needing more time on task and the SPED teachers teach a more intensive form. Works well across the service categories. Is just a nice, solid, systematic, fun MSL. We move kids still struggling to OG. Everyone, from reg ed to SPED gets reinforcement in the classroom on the computer from Lexia Learning Systems. This summer we are training Title One and SPED in Language! and will be setting up two Fourth Grade classrooms to do a 90-minute block with Language! each day to catch those kids who got that far and still need more. We are excited about that prospect and would like to hear from others who have used Language! for intensive remediation.

When I completed my Orton-Gillingham practicum, my practicum supervisor recommended these materials (among others). I have been using them for 10 years, and have found them to be very beneficial to my clients. They are particularly beneficial to special education students because they are multisensory, sequential, and structured which is important. They were originally developed for use with LD students in the Bloomington. Minn. school system. I recently used this program with an individual who had been to another tutor for 3 years with little improvement, and he made significant strides in less than a year.
