Greetings Jane G,There is a large collection of Language Arts Listening Comprehension lesson plans from the US Dept of Education’s Gateway to Education Materials at the link below.I also saw an interesting Listening Skills description and activity at ReCapp that could be easily adapted to the general classroom at etr.org/recapp/practice/listening.htmHope this helps you find what you’re looking for.

It is great that you are looking for strategies to improve listening skills. Many children do not acquire functional listening skills by themselves, and it is up to teachers to provide this skill. The strategies I found to build listening skills are listed as follows:Syllables – clap out syllables in names and wordsNursery rhymes – read nursery rhymes and occasionally leave off the word that is the rhyming element, students will fill in rhyming wordRiddle rhymes – I rhyme with look. You read me. What am I?Follow directions – students will follow directions step by step to play a game or make somethingFind the picture – line up several pictures, describe one of the pictures and ask the students to point to the correct pictureSequence of events – read a story and have students put pictures from the story in the correct sequenceListen for details – read a story and ask detailed questions about itMain idea – read a story and have the students choose the main idea from three choicesListening to advertisements – listen to advertisements and determine how the advertiser is trying to get the listener to buy the productI also found numerous lesson plans and activities for listening skills by going to the following web sites and searching the topic “listening skills”:www.educationworld.comwww.educationplanet.comI hope that this information is helpful to you. Good luck!Misty Kitchens: I’m interested in any info on strategies for improving listening
