When to start LiPS w/kindergarterner

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Could anyone tell me how to know when a kindergartener is ready to start LiPS? I have been teaching this program for nearly a year now but have never had a student this young. Would like to start with him as soon as possible if he is ready. thanks, barb in little rock

Barb, You can start this program right away but you don’t need to use the letter symbols at all for awhile if the child isn’t ready for them. Just do the auditory piece. You can teach the vowel circle without symbols - do the presentation with felts and he can practice them with you. You can do all the consonant pairs using the pictures but not the letter symbols. You can do block work with him.

If he knows letter symbols, of course by all means use them. If he doesn’t, you can slowly introduce them.

I know Montessori schools that are using LIPS with kids as young as 3 - they just do the auditory part of it.
