Many teenagers and young adults prefer the Davis program because it offers a intensive, short term program with fast results (one week), followed up with self-directed work. Of course, you should do the follow up if you want lasting results. It would help to know what problems you are experiencing. The Davis program is very good for overcoming perceptual issues, such as letter reversals or having the sense of letters moving around on a page; and it is geared strongly to building higher-order reading skills such as whole word recognition, comprehension, and reading fluency.A good place for you to get feedback from others about the Davis program is the Dyslexia Bulletin Board at the Davis site: http://www.dyslexiatalk.com/-Abigail Marshall Davis Dyslexia Association webmaster http://www.dyslexia.com/
You should do some research before deciding, as there are a number of different programs available. Much depends on the nature of your learning problems.Davis tends to be helpful with people who are visual-spatial learners experiencing orientation confusion, but it is not a reading program. Some people who initially seem to benefit from it do not see lasting results. I have seen the entire gamut of posts about it — from parents who were very disappointed in it, to parents who think it is wonderful. The posts have been about equally divided.LMB has a number of different programs. LiPS works on developing phonemic awareness. Seeing Stars is a reading program. LMB has been around for about 20 years and has a good track record. However, there are newer programs that may be more effective (see below).Usually children who have trouble with reading have either visual processing problems or auditory processing problems. Regular hearing and vision exams do not check for these kinds of problems. If you haven’t yet been to a developmental optometrist (http://www.covd.org has a search option to find them in your area) and an audiologist who specializes in CAPD (http://pages.cthome.net/cbristol/ has a search option to find qualified audiologists), then it would be a good idea to get these exams before deciding on therapies. Both evaluations are often covered by medical insurance. Best bet is to find a qualified professional at the websites and then call them, as often they can tell you whether your insurance would cover the exam and, if so, what needs to be done to ensure coverage (referral from GP, or….).When researching therapies, I would recommend looking at PACE (http://www.mentalskills.com) and Phono-Graphix (http://www.readamerica.net). These would be likely to help more in less time than LMB or Davis, in my opinion.Mary: I’m a student withlearning problems.Have heard of both Lindamood and
