phonemic awareness test

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Can anyone steer me in the direction of a good test of phonemic awareness? I’m a classroom teacher and will be using it as part of my beginning of the year assessment. Thanks.

Yopp-Singer is a really involved test. You might check the pa test in the Reading Reflex book.

Also check out Dibels. I think it is through the University of Oregon. If you do a search for Dibels you should find it.

The PA test in Reading Reflex is great because it takes only about 15 min to give and if you are the only person in the classroom, you don’t have much time. It is quite easy to give and I give it the first week of the school year while my kids are doing puzzles or watching a movie.

The CTOPP (Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing) was recommended to me. It tests phonological Processing and Rapid Naming. It has norms for age 7 to 21 year old. You can also use it for age 5 or 6 but just use sub parts of the test.

For a classroom teacher, I think the DIBELS materials are just what is needed. You can also devise your own. Depending upon your grade level you want to know if they can rhyme, segment syllables into 2,3,4 or 5 sounds, blend 2,3,4, and 5 sound sequences into syllables and manipulate the sounds within words. DIBELS offers these kinds of assessments. I suggest this over CTOPP due to costs. We need standard scores for special ed. eligibility, not for classroom diagnosis and intervention.
