Any first grade teachers out there with good beginning of the year fun stuff?? I want to create something with my class, like a color book or something to get them thinking about school and reading.
Re: beginning of the year
Of course, the most exciting thing you can do for the kids to get them interested in reading is to teach them to read. Get going with one letter and its most common phonic sound and how to print it every day, and a couple of high-frequency words sounded out and spelled and printed and related to those letters every day, and by the end of September most of them will be reading a pre-primer independently and starting to print sentences of sorts. That’s *really* exciting! Nothing wrong with all the other creative activities of course, and you have several hours a day to do many interesting things, but if you want to teach reading, the most effective way is to spend your reading lesson time teaching reading.
Try these 2 sites. I really use them frequently throughout the year.
