Duolog Reading Program

Does anyone have any information or opinions about the Duolog Reading Program? My children’s school is trying to implement it this year, and I am wondering if anyone can give me the pros and cons of this program, especially for my LD child, who has ADD and CAPD. Thanks

Duolog is really a technique and not a program. It has been adopted by Reading Rennaissance but it has been a technique for a long time .It is basically paining a stronger reader with a weaker reader. They read orally together. The stronger reader is slightly behind and to the side of the weaker reader. The stronger reader is the beginning leader but they quickly defer to the weaker reader. Thanks for your response. I went to the site you gave me and read about this technique. I have concerns about students doing this together, mainly for self-esteem issues for the weaker reader. Kids know who the leader is and who is struggling, and some can be quite brutal about it. We know this first-hand, with my child who struggles. I think my child’s school is only going to use adult volunteers, so maybe that will take care of that issue. I guess we’ll find out!

I have used this technique with students and it has worked well. The key is matching readers. You should pick students who are not too far apart. You don’t put 2 equally low readers together or a very high reader with a very low reader. You will be surprised how the low reader may have better wordsmithing skills and coaching ability then the higher reader. It really helps with fluency and expression for both students.

I think that this kind of program is good if both children have decoding skills close to grade level and the one is just slower than the other. If the decoding skills aren’t close to grade level, this doesn’t help. This is how I use a fluency program.
