Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic, as long as the person has a documented disability, has a great program.

Additionally, if you are talking about a student, the school they attend should have a membership to RFBD for textbooks, etc. on tape for their special needs students If not, you need to write a letter “encouraging” them to get the service for your child.

The local library should also have a more limited supply and I have even heard the restaurant, Cracker Barrel, will lend tapes, for a nominal fee, that you can return at another restaurant if you are traveling.

Talking Tapes out of St. Louis, MO rents tapes of novels and textbooks, too. They rent for a semester or a school year or a month.

They have a website: http://www.talkingtapes.org/

The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped will send out books on tape through the post office to your home if your child qualifies. The postage is all free, AND they provide the tape recorder for your child to “read” the books. My son is 12, very dyslexic and has had books on tape for a couple of years. They even told me that if I provide the name, author, edition, etc of his school text books that they would put those on tape!

Go to www.loc.gov/nls to find more information. Your child has to have a physical disability. My son’s dyslexia qualified as this. The local library referred me to the local NLS for the Blind & Phys. Handicapped. They sent me a form that my son’s psychiatrist had to sign off on (it was a short, simple form). Then they sent us catalogs and a tape recorder. My son “reads” every night, and I think the books have been great for his vocabulary and general knowledge.
