Lindamood Tutor allowed to tutor in aftershcool program?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I was just wondering if I request that my son be tutored by his reading spec. who is teaching him from the lindamood program. He is supposed to have his reading lab during that time, but will be working on CCC Reading which I don’t think he will benifit from.
Since he is going to be in the after care program until 5:00. And since he has to see his tutor 2x a week. Do you think the school will allow it?
I really haven’t spoken to his tutor about this yet, as it just popped into my head.
Just wondering???

for-profit activities on school property. As an example, I cannot see students from other school districts in my building (or any other public school building) if I am charging for the service. In the case of volunteer endeavors, the principal has the final word. We I part of the non-profit organization, my principal could say yes.

The answer will probably be no. Wouldn’t it be nice to fill that dead space, though.

Silly of me to even post that question…….I guess I must have been asking for the impossible for a change. Although, I consider myself lucky to even have found someone so close to home to tutor him with a program I’m totally confident will work.
Thanks

Schools quite rightly have strict rules preventing their OWN teachers from doing tutoring for money on site — just imagine if you could pay the teacher to help you with her own tests, a real can of worms.
However schools hire people for extra jobs all the time, part-time teachers and aides and so forth.
It would be worth exploring this with your school — remember, the worst they can do is say no and you would be no worse off than before.

The International Dyslexia Association has a tutoring services number in Manhattan. It is 212-691-1930.

You are not wrong for questioning. That is how one continues to learn.

While I’m sure your tutor is good, you never know what the future hold.

Susan,
The tutor I have belongs to several organizations such as Int’l Dyslexia Assoc., Learning Disabilities Assoc., CHADD. I have every confidence that this will work well for my son. But, will keep your suggestion on hand.

We are only at the beginning stages of finding out the areas he needs help in.
I think I was looking for ways to make it easier for him (and me) to get the much needed help at time and place where he wouldn’t be tired at the end of a long day and his attention span wouldn’t be depleated.
Thanks again.

we were able to have a private tutor come into the public school, at our expense, during the middle of the school day. we did this instead of the resource room reading instruction and the school approved it. they did not like it but still allowed it to happen 2x per week. so it doesn’t hurt to ask, or insist, if this is the most appropriate learning situation for your child. good luck!
