I am looking for a reading program that will work for my students who have disabilities. Most of my students are in the sixth grade and are non-readers. I would appreciate any information on programs that teachers have found successful.
Re: Reading Program
I’ve had success with SRA’s Corrective Reading in a group setting in public school — however, the disabilities were not severe, but rather hadn’t really been addressed so the students weren’t non readers, just very poor readers.
I had even more success with more severely disabled students with Orton-Gillingham methods (of which Herman is one, by the way; Wilson reading is, too). I had extensive training — it’s not something you cna wing (though in a setting a little less severe than a special school I wouldn’t have needed as much training).
Re: Reading Program
I have usde many programs and have landed on the Lindamood Bell programs. They deal with phonemic sequencing, and have programs that support comprehension and sight words too. I have also used “Project Read” and found it easier to use in bigger group. It is a phonology program and has a comprehension and writing program as well. I particularly like those.
The program that I have used and has been very successful is The Herman Reversing Reading Disabilities. I know its an old program. I picked it out of my school’s trash can many years ago. The Herman is a multisensory approach to reading, the way I used it with my students. With this program and my own creativity (depending on each child’s learning style and needs) I actually saw them go from non readers to reading and eventually exiting Resource reading in 3 years of intensive reading instruction. At this moment I am using that program with a bilingual 5th grader who could not read a single word, I started her on that program about 4 weeks ago, and now she reads”The Fat Cat Sits on the Mat” book.
